Macao Draws 'Dream Team' of International Hotel Brands, Leading Investors

'COTAI Strip(TM) Macao is destined to become Asia's Las Vegas(TM). By assembling a critical mass of world-class hotel brands this development will reposition Macao as an international tourist and convention and exhibition destination,' said Mr. Sheldon G. Adelson, chairman and chief executive officer of Las Vegas Sands Corp. 'Thanks to the efforts of the assembled group of world-renowned hotel brands and regional and local investors, and especially the Macao government, the vision of the COTAI Strip is clearly taking shape.' Mr. Adelson, the visionary behind the COTAI Strip, said the project will likely be the single largest mixed-use tourism development ever constructed simultaneously. While unveiling a massive model of the proposed COTAI Strip, Mr. Adelson said the first phase of the strip is scheduled to open in 2007 -- a phase which will feature seven resort hotels comprising more than 10,000 guest rooms set amidst lush tropical landscapes. Joining Las Vegas Sands executives in Macao were representatives from hotel companies Dorsett Hotel Group, Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, Hilton Hotels (Hilton, Conrad, Scandic), InterContinental Hotels Group (InterContinental, Holiday Inn), Marriott International (Marriott, Renaissance), Regal Hotels and Starwood Hotel and Resorts Worldwide (Sheraton, W). 'Never have so many recognizable brands assembled in one place at one time to create a new international tourism destination almost over night,' said William P. Weidner, LVS president and chief executive officer. 'It took 75 years for Las Vegas to emerge as an international destination. Our intention is to replicate that feat in less than three years, and Las Vegas Sands is working closely with all of the hotel companies and investors to conclude their arrangements and realize this vision.'" more

2005 Investment Climate Statement -- Macau, February 2005

U.S. Department of State's 2005 INVESTMENT CLIMATE STATEMENT -- for MACAU The Government hopes to diversify Macau's economy by attracting foreign investment and is committed to maintaining an investor-friendly environment. Corporate taxes are low. The tax rate is 15 percent for a company's net profits greater than USD 37,500 (300,000 patacas). For net profits less than USD 37,500, the tax ranges from 2 percent -15 percent. In his November 2004 annual policy address, Chief Executive Edmund Ho said that his administration planned to submit a proposal to the Legislative Assembly in 2005 to lower the rate of corporate income tax so that it is closer to the personal tax rate. The top personal tax rate is 12 percent, and a 12-13 percent corporate tax rate would be one of the lowest in the world. The Government is seeking to develop Macau into a commercial and trade service provider for China, particularly the West Guangdong region. It also aims to facilitate trade and economic cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries. In 2002, the Government ended a long-standing gaming monopoly when it awarded two gaming concessions to consortia with U.S. interests. This opening is significantly boosting the U.S. business profile and investment in Macau. In addition, a third U.S. gaming concern plans to team up with the former monopolist to build a large Las Vegas-style casino. more here:

Green light for Macau, Hong Kong bridge

BEIJING, China (Reuters) -- China has given the green light to link Hong Kong to Macau and the mainland with a multi-billion-dollar road bridge, the China Daily said on Tuesday. Promoters of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge have proposed an enormous structure stretching 29 km (18 miles). The newspaper said it would directly connect Hong Kong and Macau to booming ports in southern China's Pearl River Delta region. Private investment would be allowed to have a 'primary role' in funding the 31.5 billion yuan ($3.8 billion) project. 'We are going to make a big breakthrough in infrastructure cooperation between Hong Kong and the mainland,' Ma Kai, head of the National Development and Reform Commission, was quoted as saying during the ongoing session of China's parliament." more

Macau church officials worry casinos lure students away from school

Three months before his graduation, Ah Wai quit school and abandoned plans to become a social worker in favor of dealing cards at a newly opened casino in Macau. In January, the 23-year-old Macau resident was promoted to manager; he now monitors operations at gambling tables in the casino, reported UCA News, an Asian church news agency based in Thailand. 'My parents have been unemployed for a long time, and I have a mentally disabled younger brother to look after,' Ah told UCA News. 'Although I would like to pursue studies in social work, relatives and friends have urged me to take up a job with high pay to improve my family's income.'

More than just gambling in Macau

Let me just clarify from the get-go: there’s more to Macau than casinos. Macau – often viewed by its haughty Hong Kong neighbours as a quaint backwater settlement – is relaxed and laid-back. The ruins of St Paul's Cathedral is Macau’s most famous landmark. Because of its small size, pedestrian-friendly layout and East-meets-West factor, it’s easy for visitors to enjoy strolling through the narrow cobbled alleys, past grand baroque churches, balconied colonial mansions, open plazas dotted with Mediterranean-style cafés filled with palm-readers, caged birds and pipe-smokers. And because of this time-warp feel, Macau has always been overshadowed by its glitzy near-neighbour Hong Kong – which is precisely why it’s so attractive.

HK PRESS: Hutchison Telecom Eyes 3G License In Macau

HONG KONG (Dow Jones)--Hutchison Telecommunications International Ltd. (HTX) is interested in bidding for a third-generation telecom license in Macau, The Standard reports. The report cites Agnes Nardi, the managing director of HTIL unit Hutchison Telecom Hong Kong, as saying the heavy flow of people between Hong Kong and Macau offers a good way to boost roaming revenue in data and voice traffic. The Macau government aims to issue at least two 3G licenses this year and wants to see a service launch by the end of next year, the paper said. HTIL is a telecommunications spinoff of ports-to-telecom conglomerate Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. (0013.HK), controlled by Hong Kong's most prominent tycoon, Li Ka-shing.

Private Eyes Discuss Macau Risks

I-OnAsia expects that the overall number of violent cases in Macau, as well as the magnitude of the cases themselves, will fall compared to a year ago. Most likely, this is because with the local economy booming, Macanese gangsters have been far too busy making money by maintaining the peace to resort to violence. Analysis of law enforcement actions in Macau, Hong Kong, and Guangdong against organized crime in the region supports this fact. In 2004, Hong Kong listed businesses with operations in Macau saw their stocks rise by over 500%, and property investors there have more than doubled their money. In November 2004, the South China Morning Post reported an 18.7% year on year drop in violent cases, which far outpaced the overall decline in the crime rate of 4%. During the first three quarters of 2004, there had also been far less high impact gangland conflict of the type experienced before a 1999 truce brokered between rival gangs and the subsequent incarceration of 14K Triad boss “Broken Tooth” Wan Kuok-Kui. The largest coordinated anti-triad enforcement action in 2004, which was code named Sun Rise and resulted in the arrest of an amazing 1,569 suspected triad members, was aimed at combating vice (such as prostitution, illegal bookmaking, and illicit drugs).
